The global magnet market is expected to grow 9.5% CAGR from 2021 to 2026. This growth is fueled by consumer electronics, in applications such as the magnetic heads of hard disk drives, the motors of peripheral devices such as printers and scanners, internal mechanisms for smartphones, large screen TVs, etc. Of course, the increased demand for electronic vehicles and wind turbines is expected to augment this growth substantially as well.
Soft magnetics (magnets that are not permanently magnetized) lend themselves well to electrification applications. The building blocks for soft magnetics are available in powder form, for press compaction into a wide variety of shapes and sizes.
Rare earth magnets are strong permanent magnets made from alloys of rare-earth elements. These produce much stronger magnetic fields than traditional ferrite or alnico magnets. This strength allows them to be used in applications where traditional magnets are less than ideal. Rare earth elements are mined, separated, and further processed, eventually becoming a powder suited for compaction. In rare earth powder magnet compaction, an electric field needs to be generated around the die area while compaction is taking place to maintain magnetic field alignment.
